Ma Jianchu

Ma Jianchu works in oil and acrylic, returning to mountains, woodland and the rhythms of rural life. Curving strokes set foliage, cloud and water in motion; deep blues and greens give way to flashes of yellow, pink and orange. His selection on Artmotri also includes scenes of harvest and childhood, placing everyday rural life alongside the energy of the landscape.

Born in 1952, Ma is from Wanyuan, Sichuan. He entered an oil-painting postgraduate class at Southwest Normal University in 1989, taught art at Chongqing Social University from 1991 to 2004, and also held academic leadership roles in Chongqing. His exhibition history includes the Ninth National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1999 and the Chongqing Painting Academy's Inheritance and Exploration invitational in 2010.
