Cheng Xiaoping
Cheng Xiaoping approaches the Chinese landscape as a field of shifting colour and atmosphere. Mountains rise through mist, dark ridges meet pale open passages, and concentrated blues or greens interrupt softer tones. In the paintings presented here, recognisable terrain and freely worked surfaces remain in conversation, allowing the landscape to feel expansive without becoming a literal record of a place.
He is a class-of-1983 alumnus of the Central Academy of Arts and Design and formerly directed the Art and Design Institute at Nanjing University of the Arts. His solo exhibition Magnificent Mountains and Rivers was shown at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing in August 2023.
