An Qibang
An Qibang brings the fluidity of ink painting into a vivid, expressive approach to landscape and abstraction. Brilliant reds, greens and blues carry the movement of water, the heat of a sky or the density of a wooded hillside. In the works presented here, recognisable scenes sit alongside looser compositions in which colour and gesture become the subject.
His early training was in traditional Chinese ink painting. Travel and study in Europe during the 1990s brought an engagement with Western oil painting and Impressionist techniques, followed by an exploration of the space between figuration and abstraction. That combination offers a way to read the variety of his paintings: from spare, atmospheric passages to densely worked fields of colour.
